The Eagle’s Nest
Not all children in Beregowo have a safe place to sleep. They spend the night with their alcoholic mother, friends or a mother who works in the prostitution. These children are not living on the street, but do not have a home either. The purpose of this program is first of all to offer children first of all a safe place. In the Eagle’s Nest they can be children. Furthermore, they are encouraged to think about their future and get acquainted with the Gospel. They also learn skills which help them to live independently in Ukrainian society.

Child Sponsor Programme
The Child Sponsor Programme supports children in very poor families financially. With this support they receive sufficient food and clothes, can go to school and can grow up at home instead of a children’s home or boarding school. Local contacts persons bring the monthly donations from people in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and England to the families. They also encourage them by means of God’s Word and pray with them for their needs.

Family house
The family house takes care of children who are abandoned by their parents. Often the parents are deprived of their ‘parental rights’ by Ukrainian officials. Normally, these children would find a place in a state owned boarding school. In the family house however, the child can make up for lost time in development, through love and attention. When the child reaches the normal developmental level for its age, it can be adopted into a Ukrainian family. Several children have recovered and found a place in a lovely family where they can grow up in a safe atmosphere.

Schoolbags
A lot of families don’t have enough money to buy their children stuff for school, like pencils, books, notepads and a bag. SEM provides these poor families with bags at the end of the summer. In this way we support education to give these children a chance for a better future.

Children’s Department Hospital
Many children who spend time in the children’s department of hospitals come from disadvantaged families. Poverty, unemployment and alcohol problems are the reason for this. The children arrive in this department directly after birth, or when the situation at home is critical, and is replaced by the children protection service of the local government. The babies in the hospital receive food with no variety and the hygiene is bad, but what these children need most is love and attention. The SEM workers in the Children’s Department are achieving visible results in the social and emotional development of these children, from which the child benefits for the rest of his or her life.

Family Care
Many babies in the Children’s Department stay there for months, a period in which there is almost no contact between mother and child. If the baby comes home, the emotional tie with the mother is missing or less developed. The Family Care project supports contact between mother and child and helps to improve the home situation. In this way the child can stay at home, and the vicious circle of going to the hospital, to home, and back to the hospital is broken.
